Mahjong Solitaire: rules and examples

Take a moment with Mahjong Solitaire before moving to another game. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

One thing to notice as you play

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

What the game asks you to do

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Take a moment to understand the current position.

From the start of a round

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

The controls to know

Tap two free matching tiles. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

Learn from a sample situation

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

A mistake to avoid

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Check the rule before repeating the action. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
