The Futoshiki playbook

Bring your attention to one round of Futoshiki. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Take a closer look while playing

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

The purpose of your moves

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

From the start of a round

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

How to use the controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Compare the situation with the worked example. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
